3rd Graders Reflect on the 3 R’s

When I visit a classroom, I don’t get to spend much time with the students – each presentation is 45 minutes at the most and then I move on to a different class or school.

I recently had a rare opportunity to travel back in time to meet students when they were a few years younger. Third graders at Olney-Bissell School near Whitefish have a long relationship with recycling. They even created a movie about the 3 R’s when they were in kindergarten! At the end of my visit with the third grade class, I popped in the DVD that they hadn’t seen in years and enjoyed their priceless reactions.

Many gasped, others couldn’t lift their jaws, and one girl covered her face while declaring, “I’m so embarrassed!” It was a real privilege to meet  these students’ former selves and also get a glimpse of how much work their teacher had done to introduce them to Reducing, Reusing, and Recycling.
