The non-profit statewide organization, Recycle Montana, Inc., recently awarded their annual 2019 Recycler of the Year award. The “Golden Bale,” a crushed and cubed composite of aluminum cans painted in gold was awarded to Helena Recycling, LLC.
Helena Recycling, LLC is a small, locally-owned Helena business that started in 2009 offering curbside recycling pick-up for residents and businesses. During the business startup, owner and Helena native, John Hilton worked full-time during the week managing a bank and picked up recycling on the weekends.
His dedication, hard work and perseverance paid off. As the business continued to expand and grow, he was able to leave the bank in 2011 to devote his full attention to the curbside recycling business. For the next three years he drove the truck and picked up the recycling himself. In 2013, he was able to hire his first employee to assist with the curbside pickups.
John’s business continued to expand, and in 2017, he purchased land and built a recycling center to store, bale and ship the recyclable materials. A couple of years later, Helena Recycling, LLC worked with the City of Helena to create a program that would be partly subsidized by the City for curbside recycling services for city residents. Helena Recycling has now grown to five full time employees.
The business is successful due to John’s hard work and the opportunity he provides for the citizens of Helena to recycle. Although recycling services are easy and mandatory in many large communities, Helena presents a unique challenge given its relatively small population and remote location to external recycling commodity markets. Helena Recycling has worked hard to make recycling and curbside pick-up services work for the benefit of the Helena community and the environment.
Some other exciting news for Helena Recycling is the start up of Eco Safe Shredding & Recycling, a mobile document shredding company that services the Helena area.
